- This is conducted by an Executive Magistrate (who are revenue officials), such as District Collector, deputy Collector, Tahasildar, etc.
- It is done in cases of
- (1) death in prison
- (2) death in police custody
- (3) death due to police firing
- (4)dowry death
- (5) exhumation
- (6) death in a psychiatric hospital (S. 176, I.P.C).
