OneNote for iPad updated

OneNote was recently updated on iPad and brought in a few handy improvements. Before I begin, I must make a few disclaimers: –

  • I’m new to iOS and iPads
  • There doesn’t seem to be a way to check recent app updates and what new features were added. Will be glad if anyone can help.
  • For all we know, this feature was there before as well, but I only noticed it now. If that’s the case- do let me know. Now back to the article: –

Up until recently, if I had to take a picture with the iPad’s camera in between using the pencil to handwrite notes, I had to go through the following steps: –

  • Go to Draw tab
  • Select “A” – I think it is called the text mode button
  • Tap with finger on your OneNote page where you want to insert the picture
  • Go to Insert tab
  • Select Camera
  • Take Picture, Crop, insert…etc.

But now the process has been simplified: –

  • Go to Insert tab. Only “Online Pictures” button would be active, the rest including “Camera” would be greyed out.
  • Tap with your finger where you want to insert the picture. The buttons under Insert Tab are now highlighted.
  • Select Camera
  • Take picture, crop, post etc.

The Whole process has become much more natural and as someone who does this daily, I really appreciate this small fix.

The OneNote camera app now opens and gives you three different modes- Photo, Document and Whiteboard. I usually must take pictures of PPT slides on live zoom classes, so I use Document as it does an excellent job of detecting the edges of the slide and separating out the unnecessary parts- the laptop border, the keyboard, parts of wall behind my laptop and such.

Once the picture has been clicked, you are presented with the following 6 options with self-explanatory names and icons: –

Once you select “Done”, you’re done!

It was a minor update, but important, nonetheless. OneNote for iOS is an excellent app that works beautifully across device form factors and Operating Systems. There are others too but when it comes to cross platform compatibility, especially iPad+Windows laptop- nothing comes close.
