Boat Rockerz 245v2 doesn’t steer too far from the extremely popular formula of budget Bluetooth headphones flooding the market today- decent audio with decent battery life at a decent price. So, what makes this one stand out from a sea of other similarly priced and specced options and why you might want to look at other options? Let’s find out in this review of Boat Rockerz 245v2.
First, the competition at this price point is fierce. Companies like pTron and Boult Audio have various bestselling models under ₹1000, not to mention some from Boat itself. A look through thousands of ratings and reviews, averaging above 3.5 on amazon and flipkart for these will tell you choosing a sweet spot amongst these is tricky.
Boat Rockerz 245v2 – design and features
The design is like other boat headphones. Colour options include black, red, green (the one i have) and two kinds of blue. My unit felt nice to touch and the colour is elegant. There are no glossy surfaces hence you are spared the trouble of cleaning up fingerprints frequently.
The left of the band has just the white boat logo and doesn’t have any buttons or light, probably just a housing for battery.
The right side however has 3 buttons, an indicator light, and a crappy microphone- more on that later. This is also the part that has the charging port.
In the box, you get the headphone itself, two extra pairs of earbud tips, a micro-usb charging cable (no type c), a manual, a 1-year warranty card, and a sticker that reads boathead– perhaps for hardcore boat fans to flaunt. I am no fan of any such company yet, but the sticker does look cool and went well with my laptop’s design.
Specifications
While shopping for headphones under 1000, i don’t really pay as much attention to specs as i do to people’s reviews. But just for the sake of completeness, I’ll mention them here: –
Playtime | 8 hours |
Standby | 120 hours |
Battery | 100mAh, Rechargeable |
Bluetooth Version | 5.0 |
Drivers | 12mm Dynamic |
Recommended Charging Brick | 5V 2A |
Recommended Charging Cable Charging Time Durability | 35 strands of 0.10mm diameter each 1.5 hours IPX5 Sweat and Water Resistance |
The power button is at the center flanked by the volume up/down buttons on either side. They do have some symbols printed on the buttons which makes it easy to find them by touch while you are wearing them, but it’s still quite a struggle.
Fit and Comfort
The headphones come in at around 60g, quite light for the class. I can’t say the weight was noticeable while wearing, but if it got sweaty, and I was out, it did feel slightly uncomfortable. I found putting it around the shirt collar helped, but I guess that’s a common issue with headphones of this form factor.
The earbuds were quite comfortable though, plus there are two other sizes to fit a larger variety of people. Boat added Bluetooth 5.0 and as such the device has a decent range of 10 meters not only on paper, but also in practice. Just make sure there aren’t any walls in your line of sight between the headphones and the connected phone/laptop.
Audio Quality
Audio is great, no doubt about it. The 12mm drivers inside deliver beautiful symphonies or crazy awesome rock- whatever your choice of music is. The snug fit of the earphones also serves as passive noise cancellation, and it works amazingly. Once these were plugged in, even with music volume around 20-30%, I couldn’t hear a word from outside. Perfect for falling asleep to my favourite melodies even if there’s an electric saw operating next to me.
It’s a budget device, so don’t expect any sort of app support or fancy equalizers or anything. You can always use the default equalizers built in your laptop/phone though.
The microphone though is a complete horror story. It’s pathetic, and that’s being generous. Because 9 out of 10 times, it just won’t work. I thought at first it might be a faulty unit, hence requested an exchange. But to my utter disappointment, the second unit had the same issue as well. No one across the end of the phone call could ever hear a word i said. Ultimately, I decided to keep it and not return it since I was frustrated, and I didn’t need the earphones.
Yes, I know. it’s foolish. But hey! I got it changed twice! and I desperately needed earphones to listen to songs! and this one did that very well. Plus, there were other reasons- but they don’t matter. Bottomline- You shouldn’t make this mistake! I make these mistakes, so you don’t have to, is that ok Mr. Reader??? Don’t let my ₹₹₹ go to waste.
Battery
Boat Rockerz 245v2 boasts of an impressive battery life. I always managed to use it more than 6 hours for my online classes. The company description says 8 hours, but i never got that far.
The charging time claimed by the company again is 1 hour less than what I saw. The description says 1.5 hours, but it always took me around 2 to 2.5 hours to get them topped up, which is quite long. Keeping that in mind I kept plugging it in every 4 or 5 hours when i was not using it. Since the charging time is long, and there’s no “quick charge” feature here, it really sucks when you are in the middle of your teams class and the earphone dies.
The LED indicator lights up to tell you whether it’s charging or not. The red light means its charging, while the blue means its charged 100% and you are ready to “plug into nirvana” – as the recorded audio says.
Other things and Conclusion
You can’t pair this up with more than one device at a time. If you plug it in for charging, it will get disconnected. Don’t have this headphone paired in the Bluetooth settings on more than 1 of your devices. Or it will enter one hell of a pairing loop. Mine kept getting connected and then disconnected from my phone to my laptop and to my tablet and then on and on. It was a complete mess.
It is IPX5 rated, meaning it can handle sweat and a splash of rain fine. Still, it’s wise not to wear this, getting drenched in rain continuously in case you were trying to recreate the “tip tip barsa” moment with your special someone. Bad Idea. For workouts and morning jog- its perfectly safe though.
Note however that official documentation claims to have fast charge, better battery, decent microphone etc. but real-world usage, at least in my case, has been quite different as shared in this post. With that said, it’s more than likely that I got a bad stock, both times, in which case you should totally check these out especially if the price is discounted. I am fine with the audio quality and battery and comfort for long term us. If only the microphone worked as well, it would have been perfect for the price and my use case. Hope you have better luck.
That’s all for today folks.
See ya!
Peace!
